Trusting God's Process

Notes:

What do you do when the life you're living doesn't look like the life you expected? The life you imagined?

Here's the big idea: You don't have to understand God's process to trust God’s character. (His goodness for your life)

1. Surrender Your Plans to God's Purposes

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David.

1 Samuel 16:13

The calling comes in a moment. The process takes years.

Notes:

Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him. Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”

So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.” One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with him.”

Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”

1 Samuel 16:14-19

Moving forward with God sometimes looks like moving backwards to the world.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.

Proverbs 3:5

Notes:

2. Trust God's Timing, Even When You're Tired of Waiting

As they danced, they sang: 'Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.' Saul was very angry...The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul…while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand and he hurled it, saying to himself, 'I'll pin David to the wall.

1 Samuel 18:7–8, 11

How long, LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

Psalm 13:1

But I trust in your unfailing love.

Psalm 13:5

But I trust in you, LORD; I say, 'You are my God.' My times are in your hands.

Psalm 31:14–15

He has made everything beautiful in its time.

Ecclesiastes 3:11

Sometimes you have to wait a long time for the suddenly of God.

Notes:

3. Refuse the Shortcuts When the Process Gets Painful
(Never compromise your integrity when the process gets painful)

So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David...He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. The men said, 'This is the day the LORD spoke of...He said to his men, 'The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD's anointed, or lay my hand on him.’

1 Samuel 24:2–4, 6

Never sacrifice who God is calling you to be, to get where God is calling you to go. Never sacrifice your character when the process is taking longer than expected.

The shortcut might get you something you want, but cost you the very thing God is building in you.

Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.

Hebrews 13:5

Notes:

4. Run toward God in the process, Not Away From Him

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
Hebrews 13:5

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Psalm 56:3

I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me...My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.

Psalm 57:2, 7

Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?

1 Samuel 22:3

Because God isn't just interested in getting you somewhere. He's interested in who you're becoming on the way.

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 1:6
