Question of Identity

We need boys who are gentle at a dance and heroic in a shipwreck.  --GK Chesterton

Centurion: occupier, tax-taker, cheapter,

Luke 7:1-10

1When Jesus had finished saying all this to the people who were listening, he entered Capernaum. There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servantWhen they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” So Jesus went with them.

He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.”10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

What's Your Under/Over?

Culture who blame-shifts

Unhinged, unteathered, unsubmitted culture

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Submission

You judge a tree by its fruit

Fruits of the spirit:

Love

Joy

Peace

Patience

Kindness

Goodness

Faithfulness

Gentleness

Self-Control

Daniel 4:28-32

28 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”

31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”

Submission is at the center of creation.

We were made for submission

Hebrews 4:13

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him ot Whom we must give account.

1. God is mutually submitted within Himself

John 15:10

10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

John 15:26

26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.

John 16:15

15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”

Matthew 26:39

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

2. We are to submit to one another

Ephesians 5:21

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Philippians 2:3,5

…in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others…In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:...

Under/Over:

-       Right Relationship

-       Real Responsibility
